Tantalism Chat

As the old FlashChat script has caused us a lot of headaches, the action has been moved to the #tantalism channel on irc.bondage.com.

IRC is an old chat protocol which is perhaps a bit different to what you're familiar with. There are plenty of guides to help you get started, such as these ones.

You'll need to get an IRC client to get into it. Some of the popular ones include:

Once you've got one, you can go directly to irc://irc.bondage.com:6667/tantalism, or manually connect to irc.bondage.com, port 6667, and join the #tantalism channel.

There's also a simple little guide for getting into bondage.com IRC using mIRC here.

At the moment, this is better than nothing, and takes all the load of the chatroom off our server, as well as the potential for destructive attacks. Sorry if these are some awkward hoops to jump through, but it's probably the best alternative right now.

Woo Hoo

Thanks! I'm pretty excited about this.

guess it is time to undust my irc knowledge.... must be 15 years or longer since i was in an irc chat last.....

I'll be there. I'm kindof always on irc even when I'm not. So far I've seen a couple people stop by. I don't think you really have to know anything. It may help to know a couple of the more arcane invocations, but they're not at all necessary and someone on the channel can likely help.

These are the couple I think are most important...

change your nickname: /nick something
register your nickname: /msg nickserv mypassword myemail@aol.com

once you register a nick, nobody else can take it. But the next time you log in, you'll have to identify so nickserv knows who you are.

identify like so: /msg nickserv identify mypassword

send a private message: /msg biflindi hi!! help me!!!

Hey, I got in. Neat.

hi

I saw you, and I saw that you sent me a PM. I'm pretty much in there 24x7, mostly idle, but there. MindDevourer has been hanging around quite a bit too.

Client not needed

You don't actually need to download a client if you don't want to - if you have a Bondage.com username and password, you can sign into the chat right from the site, using a Java applet. Reynard, you can probably even copy the code into the site here for people who wish to use that option. And if I remember correctly (it's been a while), you don't *have* to have a B.com username if you just log into the chat from here.

They even show you how to do it: http://www.bondage.com/use_chat.asp

Fun

I'm enjoying the chat room a lot. It works very well and I have met new friends in there.

Just wondering how safe and

Just wondering how safe and secure IRC chat is? I've connected okay, but I've never used it and I'm a little bit reluctant. Scared of the unknown and all that. I don't understand what it is. Need to do some reading, I guess.

Safe!! (with caveats)

Depending on how you connect and who you trust, it can be a little dangerous. There are clients that have ancient and severe bugs that allow the dreaded: remote arbitrary code execution. (Stay away from BitchX, etc)

As long as you stick with the recommended clients, stick to #tantalism, and trust NOONE with commands given over private messages; you should be just fine. It's just a chat protocol. No worries. The bugs that exist are with the clients, not with the protocol itself.

If you're wondering if people can listen in on your conversations and things... well, of course. It's a clear text protocol. The two main types of people that can listen in are site admins, who can likely read every PM, but also probably don't. The second type is anyone who has a connection on any subnet your cleartext travels through. This is true for everything on the internet that's cleartext however, and it surely includes websites like this one (that don't use SSL) and pop3/smtp email protocols that don't use SSL.

I think I covered everything. Let me know!

I've had a lot of fun on the chat room already! Thanks!
